Meg 2: The Trench is a 2023 American – Chinese action-science fiction thriller film. Based on the 1999 novel The Trench by,and a sequel to Meg ( 2018 ), the film was directed by Ben Wheatley and stars Jason Statham , Wu Jing , Cai Shuya, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels , Sienna Guillory and Cliff Curtis . In this part, Jonas Taylor continues to cooperate with other colleagues to prevent the threat of the Megalodon shark attackin a fierce battle for survival.
Plans for a sequel to the film were made in pre-production in October 2018 following the success of the previous film. Ben Wheatley replaced Jon Turteltaub as director, while screenwriters Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber all returned to write the film. Filming began at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in Watford, England from February to May 2022, with filming moving to locations in Asia , including China , Hong Kong , and Thailand . Filming officially wrapped in August 2022.
The film premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival on June 9, 2023, and was released in the United States and Vietnam by Warner Bros. Pictures on August 4 of the same year. Despite receiving mixed to negative reviews from critics and being nominated for three Golden Raspberry Awards , the film was a box office success, grossing $ 397.7 million from a production budget of $ 129–139 million
